How to Find Items in the Freedom Forum Libraries

The instructions below refer to the subject field found on either the Freedom Forum World Center Library (Arlington) or Freedom Forum & First Amendment Center Library (Nashville) catalog search screen – accessible from the library home page, http://catalog.freedomforum.org/dbtw-wpd/library.htm.

Subject headings are assigned to each book or item based upon its content. The following subject terms are suggested for use in locating items about African Americans:

♦  African American* (the asterisk denotes that a ‘wild card’ character can appear, thus automatically searching for plurals).
It is important to understand that certain terminologies have changed along with the civil rights status of African Americans. Therefore, in addition to the above terms, archaic terms such as blacks, negroes, or Afro-Americans may occasionally appear as the subject heading.

  ♦  Minorit*
Use this when looking for books or materials that discuss multiple racial or ethnic groups, which may include African Americans.

Remember to always use the asterisk (*) in order to locate the most results. For example, using New* would locate all items with the terms Newsmen, Newspapers, etc.
